- Howdy:
- I have a couple of questions regarding NeXT boxes and certain
- processes. Yesterday a user was complaining that the NeXT station
- seemed slow and so I looked into it and ps reported two things that
- confuse me, I was hoping someone could explain this:
-
- next.heart.rri.uwo.ca> ps aux | more
- USER PID %CPU %MEM VSIZE RSIZE TT STAT TIME COMMAND
- vesely 148 49.9 7.1 23.9M 1.41M ? S 17hr - console (WindowServer)
- root 5445 13.9 3.2 1.72M 656K p3 R 0:00 ps aux
- kinch 5446 0.6 1.1 1.34M 224K p3 S 0:00 more
-
- next.heart.rri.uwo.ca> whoami

- The first quesetion regards the "- console (WindowServer)", this
- person logged in less than 10 minutes before I issued this command so
- it seems unlikely that it has chewed up 17hrs of CPU ;-( Also notice
- the very small PID, it clearly is a process that has been around for
- awhile.
-
- The second question regards the "ps aux" command seemingly owned by
- root, clearly kinch issued the command why does that not show up?
-
- I am most intereseted in this as a matter of curiosity, however in the
- case of the console process, it is rather largeer than it need be and
- I noticed that when it got killed, the next login was *somewhat*
- faster.
-
- Please respond by email, I will post a summary if there is interest.
