- How about the environmental cost of building a new hard drive?
- Not just the energy to forge the metals, but also the freon to
- clean the circuit boards? Just as a zeroth order estimate, the
- damage to the environment is proportional to the cost, so if
- it's cheaper to leave the machine on than to buy a new hard
- drive every two years, then it might be better to leave the
- machine on.
-
- Might be nice though if you could turn the monochrome monitor
- off.
-
- The big energy hog is the printer. If you're not turning your
- printer off after use, either automatically or manually (the
- command is /usr/etc/nppower off), then you really are needlessly
- consuming energy. Not just in keeping the printer hot, but in
- the air-conditioning to counter that heat source.
