- Check out my submission, called splitter.tar.Z, at both the
- nova.cc.purdue.edu and cs.orst.edu archive sites. Nothing special here,
- just a C program to split Usenet archives into separate threads suitable
- for Librarian. An old version exists at the Purdue site in 2.0-release/
- source. The new version replaces it. I fixed a couple of problems and
- included some tiff's you can use in Librarian. (NOTE: If you scarfed
- this up from submissions between 20:39 and 23:16 CDT on Aug 12, you got a
- version with an error in it - a correct version has now replaced it in
- submissions). A very thorough README file is included and explains all
- the details. I find Librarian indexed archives of Usenet groups to be
- a great resource, and my program allows you to update monthly instead
- of waiting for someone to post a year's worth of Usenet in a format
- suitable for use in Librarian.
-
- I really, really, really appreciate the free archive sites, but
- sometimes the maintenance seems to fall behind for weeks at a time.
- With the new support policies, NeXT has mentioned that it will be
- more active on the net. Is it possible that NeXT will start an archive
- site such as the one at Purdue, that isn't limited to after hours use?
- After all, SGI does (although the size of the SGI archive is not
- even close to that of nova.cc.purdue.edu's)...
