  18. ATHENA DESIGN ANNOUNCES THE EDUCATIONAL VERSION OF MESA
  19. THE NeXT(tm) PLATEAU IN SPREADSHEETS

  21. Boston - Today, Athena Design, Inc. announced an educational
  22. edition of its Mesa spreadsheet.  This edition will have a
  23. suggested list price of $xx.  The educational edition contains
  24. the complete Mesa product include the Mesa Object Library
  25. Interface (MOLI).  It also includes the user's guide on disk
  26. but does not include telephone technical support.  It will
  27. be available September 4th.

  29. David Pollak, President and founder of Athena Design, stated,
  30. "We figured that we'd give the folks in education a break.
  31. They can use the free demo copy available on the archives
  32. or pay a xxx bucks to get a fully enabled version."

  34. Mesa includes the Mesa Object Library Interface (MOLI)
  35. which allows custom programmers to manipulate data in Mesa
  36. worksheets, feed data to worksheets in real time, print
  37. reports, and include worksheet views and graphs in custom
  38. applications.  Paul Murphy, a custom application developer
  39. with Marble Associates, said, "MOLI makes it very easy for
  40. our custom applications to interact and exchange data with
  41. Mesa worksheets."

  43. Mesa's most innovative feature is function inheritance.
  44. "Spreadsheets allow users to change data and see the
  45. changes reflected in cells that refer to that data,"
  46. says Pollak.  "We simply extended that paradigm to changes
  47. in formulas as well."  This enhancement allows users to
  48. create spreadsheet models with fewer bugs and in less time.
  49. It also simplifies modification and maintenance of
  50. spreadsheet models.

  52. Mesa provides users with the ability to build large
  53. spreadsheet models. Mesa worksheets can be over 100
  54. times larger than 1-2-3(r) worksheets.  Mesa takes
  55. advantage of many advanced techniques to speed up
  56. recalculation of large models.  Bruce Henderson, NeXT
  57. development team leader at Pages Software and co-author
  58. of Appsoft Solution, an un-released spreadsheet for NeXTSTEP,
  59. stated, "Mesa is one of the fastest recalculating
  60. spreadsheets I have ever used."  In benchmark tests used by
  61. NeXTWORLD Magazine, Mesa performed over 30 times faster than
  62. Improv(r), the Lotus(r) spreadsheet for NeXTSTEP.

  64. The educational version of Mesa will be commercially available
  65. from NeXTConnection and authorized NeXT re-sellers.  It has a
  66. suggested retail price of $xx.

  70. CultureShock, a favorite game of NeXT users all over the world.
