- WARNING: Caps Killer can corrupt the system file.
-
- Due to the annoyance factor of the caps lock key on the PowerBook 100, I found
- and installed an application called Caps Killer (I did try the newer extension
- Caps Control, but for some reason it didn't work :-( ).
-
- The documentation said to install this program in the startup applications
- folder, and to remove Apple's Caps Lock extension from the extension folder.
- This I did.
-
- PROBLEM: The caps lock key would occasionally go on and stay on. After reboot,
- problem recurred, and to make matters worse, all the system items in the apple
- menu disappeared (i.e. when pulled down, it only showed "about xxx").
-
- Getting a bit worried, I rebooted again. The mac displayed a sad mac face!
-
- I booted the installer and tried to install -- couldn't due to problem with
- system file. I booted system tools, trashed the system, and then reinstalled
- the system. After booting successfully and playing for while, I rebooted
- again. Sad mac face!!
-
- I booted system tools and tried to look at the system file with resedit. In
- keyboard layouts resource there was two entries with name "No Caps Lock", one
- with a small id (eg 8 or something), one with id 878776859 (or some such
- number)!!!
-
- That settled it --- remove the bl**din' Caps Killer. Everything works fine
- now. Having realised what the Caps Killer program was trying to do, I just
- found a "No Caps Lock" keylayout and installed directly in system. Everything
- works fine.
-
- System: PowerBook 100, system 7.0.1, tuneup 1.1.1
- Exts: BeHeirarchic
-
- NB: I had changed the system resources to reflect swapped key positions.
-
- Any comments and suggestions welcome (I'm slightly disturbed that this problem
- hasn't arisen before --- maybe the program doesn't react well to the key swap
- on the PowerBook? Surely everyone has done this though?)
-
- Cheers,
- Michael.
