  18. Close.  MPW is Macintosh Programmer's Workshop.  It is a shell/editor
  19. combination that Apple produces.  Apple (and a few third parties)
  20. develop compilers & other tools that work under the MPW environment.

  22. MPW, being a shell has a language built into it.
  23.  
  24. MPW is a misguided attempt by apple to impliment a vaguely unix like
  25. development environment on the mac.  Many (most) of the unix utilities
  26. are implimented under MPW.  One of its biggest drawbacks (IMO) is
  27. that it suffers from a Not Invented Here syndrom.  The commands are
  28. named differently, the regular expression language is different, etc.
  29. These gratuitous differences all combine to make it more difficult
  30. to learn.

  32. It is a very powerful development environment, the most powerful one
  33. on the mac, but it really sufferes from having the Mac Interface tacked
  34. onto the outside, rather than being designed into it.

  36. It is also essentually a command line interface for the Mac.  Most
  37. System things (choosing a printer / AppleShare server, etc) can be
  38. done from within MPW.
