-
- Close. MPW is Macintosh Programmer's Workshop. It is a shell/editor
- combination that Apple produces. Apple (and a few third parties)
- develop compilers & other tools that work under the MPW environment.
-
- MPW, being a shell has a language built into it.
-
- MPW is a misguided attempt by apple to impliment a vaguely unix like
- development environment on the mac. Many (most) of the unix utilities
- are implimented under MPW. One of its biggest drawbacks (IMO) is
- that it suffers from a Not Invented Here syndrom. The commands are
- named differently, the regular expression language is different, etc.
- These gratuitous differences all combine to make it more difficult
- to learn.
-
- It is a very powerful development environment, the most powerful one
- on the mac, but it really sufferes from having the Mac Interface tacked
- onto the outside, rather than being designed into it.
-
- It is also essentually a command line interface for the Mac. Most
- System things (choosing a printer / AppleShare server, etc) can be
- done from within MPW.
