- I think the problem is that the technology exists to make the systems
- easy to use. AOL is easier to use than Compu$serve, et al, (cheaper
- too, but that is beside the point).
-
- The problem with easy to use systems is that they invariable trade
- speed of use for ease of use. The better easy to use systems try
- to reduce the speed hit, by providing short cuts that the system teaches
- you. The mac menus are a prime example of this: the command keys
- are right there. You learn them as you use them, and eventually,
- they become automatic.
-
- AOL, is unfortunately not up to this stage. The keywords facility
- can be used to navigate you to any point in the system instantly (similar
- to the "go xxxx" of Compu$serve), but the system doesn't teach you
- what they are.
-
- In any case, users of AOL end up paying for the screen information
- to come down, the time to redraw, etc. Personally, I prefer to pay
- for the user friendly screens that to pay for my frustration trying
- to find / remember where something interesting is located, or reading
- help files. Even if they don't charge for it (some services don't
- charge when you are reading the help section), *MY* time is still
- valuable!
-
- However, many (most) computer nerds *LIKE* cryptic interfaces, command
- lines. Personally, I can use unix just as fast (faster for some things,
- slower for others) as I can my Mac. But I also remember what it took
- to get to that point. I was not willing to invest that time into
- Compu$serve.
