- The disappearing files and folders problem rarely appears, but it results
- from a bug that has been around awhile. System 7 Tuner 1.1.1 should prevent
- the problem from accurring but will not fix it. Included with System 7 Tuner
- 1.1.1 is a Read Me file which describes a detailed procedure for recovering
- from this problem. READ IT.

- Two things I'll add to their discussion are:
-
- 1. Try Norton Utilities for the Mac 2.0. An engineer working on Norton Utils
- actually talked me through a manual repair of a corrupted directory. Their
- product may repair your disk. If it does, backup the disk and rebuild it
- anyway.
-
- 2. The best recovery method is to:
-
- a) If you use a backup program, launch it now.
-
- b) Switch back to the Finder.
-
- c) Bring up the Find... utility (File menu) and select More Choices.
-
- d) In the expanded dialog, search for "name" "doesn't contain" "zzz" and
- check the "all at once" radio button (if your lost files are all under some
- folder, select the folder before bringing up the Find... dialog so you can
- restrict the search to that folder - that folder will be added to the popup
- that usually says "on all disks").
-
- e) Click the Find button and be patient! Your missing icons should reappear.
-
- f) NOW, immediately backup your files. Use the backup program or just copy
- everything on to other disks.
-
- g) Use Apple's or your 3rd Party's disk utility to rebuild your disk.
-
- *** Make sure you are using a recently updated disk utility. System 7 does
- not like old and rotten disk drivers! I like FWB's HDT and LaCie's
- Silverlining because they work for everything. ***
-
- h) Restore your files from backup.
-
- FINI.
