  23. The disappearing files and folders problem rarely appears, but it results 
  24. from a bug that has been around awhile. System 7 Tuner 1.1.1 should prevent 
  25. the problem from accurring but will not fix it. Included with System 7 Tuner 
  26. 1.1.1 is a Read Me file which describes a detailed procedure for recovering 
  27. from this problem. READ IT.

  29. Two things I'll add to their discussion are:

  31. 1. Try Norton Utilities for the Mac 2.0. An engineer working on Norton Utils 
  32. actually talked me through a manual repair of a corrupted directory. Their 
  33. product may repair your disk. If it does, backup the disk and rebuild it 
  34. anyway.
  35.  
  36. 2. The best recovery method is to:
  37.  
  38. a) If you use a backup program, launch it now.
  39.  
  40. b) Switch back to the Finder.
  41.  
  42. c) Bring up the Find... utility (File menu) and select More Choices.
  43.  
  44. d) In the expanded dialog, search for "name" "doesn't contain" "zzz" and 
  45. check the "all at once" radio button (if your lost files are all under some 
  46. folder, select the folder before bringing up the Find... dialog so you can 
  47. restrict the search to that folder - that folder will be added to the popup 
  48. that usually says "on all disks").

  50. e) Click the Find button and be patient! Your missing icons should reappear.
  51.  
  52. f) NOW, immediately backup your files. Use the backup program or just copy 
  53. everything on to other disks.
  54.  
  55. g) Use Apple's or your 3rd Party's disk utility to rebuild your disk.

  57. *** Make sure you are using a recently updated disk utility. System 7 does 
  58. not like old and rotten disk drivers! I like FWB's HDT and LaCie's 
  59. Silverlining because they work for everything. ***

  61. h) Restore your files from backup.
