-
- Well, I guess it was actually a humorous quote in his .signature.
-
- Anyway, if you really want to know what the diff is, try installing a system
- extension like boomerang, afterdark or first-things-first (or *any* system
- extension) on a Windows machine. On the Mac, it's drag'n'drop. On the PC it
- will surely involve modifying the winini.bat or some other arcane file.
-
- Windows is indeed a face (or facade) for DOS. However, the diff between
- Mac OS and MS DOS is that the Mac was build with a specific OS in mind
- (look into all the standartized calls in ROM) while MS DOS is an OS that
- is placed squarely on the BIOS and even produced by a different company.
- MS DOS (until very recently) used a very outdated technique for allocating
- files, called FAT which dates back to the good old CP/M days. Mac OS uses
- B+ trees for both directory and file allocation since '85, a superior
- concept that cannot that easily be changed on the MSDOS side.
-
- In my oppinion, it is not Windows that is lacking but the OS behind it
- that is not up to standard. The Mac OS is fully integrated into the
- front end (the finder) while windows is an additional layer placed on
- top of a rather ugly OS
-
- Or as a friend of mine once said: "An ape is an ape, no matter what
- mask it wears". The ape in this case would be MS DOS.

- Everything above are my own oppinions, of course. You might disagree,
- which is your right to do so. Not a flame, just my oppinion.

- Cheers,
