- Question to the net: What are the pro's and con's of upgrading
- a 5-Meg Mac IIsi to 17 Meg rather than 9 Meg?
-
- The price through MacConnection looks like $260 for 9 Meg
- and $480 for 17. I'd probably buy the Maxima extension as
- well in either case, so I could use all 9 (14 of the 17) Meg
- without turning on 32-bit addressing.
-
- My natural inclination would be to get the bigger upgrade, but
- I fear I might simply be wasting the extra $220, given the
- way I use the machine (I'm only just now starting to feel
- that 5 Meg is not enough). The cheaper
- upgrade will increase my available (non-system) RAM by over
- a factor of 2 (2.5 Meg to 6 or more, depending on how many new
- extensions I add to the system once I have the space).
- It is plausible to me that it will be at least two more years,
- if ever, before this starts feeling too small. By then, the price
- of four 4-Meg simms might well be down to less than the $220 extra
- I'd have to pay now (and there might even still be some market
- value in the 2 Meg simms I'd have to remove).
-
- So: what issues may I be missing?
-
- What kinds of individual programs (or combinations of programs)
- are likely to make me feel that 6 Meg is not enough? My main
- uses are MacDraw Pro (for drawing techical illustrations)
- and Excel, although at some point I may want to get one of
- the cheaper page layout programs to do a local school newsletter.
- Would a large ram disk (one way to use all that extra memory)
- be of major value?
-
- Any thoughts/suggestions would be welcome.
