- Subject: [*] Bachman 1.1.2u
-
- This is a new version of my Pacman-style arcade game for the Mac,
- with 3D perspective, different levels and black-and-white graphics.
- The game should work on all Macs and under all system versions.
-
- Version 1.1 adds configurable keys and better response (since you
- are now allowed to turn in any position, not only in grid intersections).
- It also has better error handling. Those of you who tried version 1.0
- on large screens know what I mean. It now gives you a proper
- out of memory error (which can be helped by increasing its memory
- allocation in Get Info) rather than quitting without explanation. Version
- 1.1.2 fixes a bug when using external files under System 7, but is
- otherwise the same as 1.1.
-
- The game is $10 shareware, which gives you the registered version, which
- includes the level editor, plus the latest versions of my other games.
-
- (No US cheques, please. Cash is much easier for me to handle.)

- Subject: [*] Bahtzee 2.0
-
- Bahtzee is a dice game adapted from a fun board game
- called Casino Yahtzee. Bahtzee is a cross between
- Bingo and Yahtzee, hence the contrived name. It was
- created in HyperCard 2.1, has (fitting) sounds, and
- was created for 2 - 4 players, although one can play
- alone.
-
- Version 2.0 includes a suitcase of fonts I used in the
- game, as well as a few optimizations. To speed up the
- game, you can set the monitor to b/w, use a system
- < 7.0, switch to finder, or turn off the sounds.
-
- Hope you like it.

-
- Here's an unusual startupscreen for you - a roughly circular image of a
- nebula in the Southern constellation Carina (I think). The image has been
- neatly merged with a 512x384 black background, making it just right for the
- 12" RGB screen. Original source was an FTP archive it Europe (but where'd
- they get it?). Caveat: this image may not be suitable for those of you with
- less than 16 bits/pixel unless it's properly dithered. Used in its present
- form, at 256 colors you might well get something which looks quite a lot like,
- er, puke. (Then again, some of you might want precisely that effect as a
- startupscreen...)

-
- DMM LW Stuff Update 1.2.2 is an update package for version 1.2 of the
- DMM LW 7.x Stuff and DMM LW 5/6 Stuff package of freeware LaserWriter
- PostScript goodies.
-
- The update corrects a few minor but annoying bugs and provides a more
- useful implementation of the serial port driver variants:
-
- 1. Serial driver variants are now really functional by establishing
- XON/XOFF flow control. Instructions are given for using ResEdit
- to alter the default 9600 baud rate, or choosing a hardware flow
- control protocol.
-
- 2. StripFonts can now properly strip the N-up dictionary in N-up
- variants.
-
- 3. The laserprep-fixups dictionary built into each driver variants
- will now work properly when embedding the PS file in another
- document.
-
- 4. Variants based on LaserWriter 5.2 or 6.0.x should no longer
- exhibit rangecheck errors on older LaserWriters.
-
- The included *ReadMe* file also provides some additional advice about
- installation problems and some other tidbits. My sincerest apologies
- for the inconvenience and annoyance caused by these problems.
-
- Distribution is a Compact-Pro self-extracting archive. PLEASE DO NOT
- USE Stuffit Expander 1.0 to expand it--you will run into installation
- troubles. Use the self-extractor or Stuffit Expander 1.0.1 or later.

-
- Yep, you need is an alias to Word so it runs from its ancestral folder.
- You may be able to make one if you can boot your machine temporarily
- >From system 7, via a 1.4 meg system floppy or an external hard drive
- that has system 7 on it. Make the alias of Word, and move the alias to
- your desktop. Then disconnect the external drive and reboot on the
- standard system 6 disk. Lo and behold, the alias is still on the
- desktop, and double clicking on it launches Word.
-
- I think this is how I got the Word alias on my own system 6 desktop...
- Don't know how robust it is (e.g. if the word application file were
- moved, would it break?)
-
- At your own risk/your mileage may vary/back up first...

- Ol' Morph Seawall ;) was going on about Morph, the hit of MacWorld, so I

- movie. Morph was the only thing I thought cool enough to buy at the show,
- although if I was serious about making QT movies, I would have gotten Pixar's
- Typestry which does flying text QT for <$200. Anyhow, I took a couple of
- QT's of my wife and myself and morphed between us. The movie is about 300K
- and on ftp.apple.com in /pub/pugh/quicktime/cary-n-jon-morph.bin so have
- at it. I tweaked this one a bit to make my mustache transition late and
- Cary's hair transition early. Morph has the ability to control the speed
- of the morph too.
-
- As for Terminator 2, there was only one scene done on the Mac, and it really
- stands out once you notice it. It was after the T1000 pins mom near the
- end and Arnold splits him with the iron bar (the Terminator, with the iron
- bar,
- in the Conservatory!). Apparently they were having a hard time getting
- the software to morph the bar out of the T1000's side, so one of the guys
- just took it into Photoshop and just drew the sequence. It is very short
- and the most noticable thing is the different color of the sequence.
-
- Morph is way cool nonetheless. Now we just need to all become movie makers.

- I'd have to agree with your raves about FrameMaker. I've been using it

- got educational pricing on it in fact, so I'll be buying my own copy to do
- my thesis with (I've been using the one at work until now). Frankly, I
- haven't noticed the lack of GREP. I HAVE used it on an LC, and it's not
- TOO slow, but it's also none too quick.
-
- If you were going to make a single investment to make Frame better, I'd
- pick a portrait monitor. I think that that comment goes for all
- word/document processors, though. For me, at least, it's a big help to be
- able to see an entire page at once, and with Frame (especially on an LC),
- the slowest thing I found is scrolling a page up or down. Don't get me
- wrong: it's not intolerable, but it is a bit slow to do all that

-
- For my money, FrameMaker is the best technical word processor.

-
- FrameMaker is a great program for creating and editing massive text
- documents.
-
- It is not without its flaws though...
-
- 1. Occasionally Copy and Cut fail to modify the ClipBoard. This is a real
- pain when yo ucut a huge section of text and then find that it never found
- its way to the ClipBoard. Frame confirmed the bug via email.
-
- 2. Unlike Quark, PageMaker, Nissus, and MS Word, you cannot wrap text around
- graphics. Frame claims to be working on this feature.
-
- 3. It doesn't respond to many "Mac-like" that are fairly standard in the
- current world. For example, when you select Restart or ShutDown in the Finder
- with Frame running in the Background, the Finder is unable to convince Frame
- to Quit, so you must do it manually before the ShutDown can continue.
-
- There are a slew of little glitch in the interface, but I still recommend
- FrameMaker 3.0 to anyone trying to work with massive text projects.
- (I use it for software manuals.)

- I recently purchased the new Radius 24xp accelerated graphics

- According to my SysError DA, this is a heap collision between the

- My Mac II has 8MB of RAM, a Maxtor 213s HD, a 68851 PMMU (but I'm

- PowerPC: I have not the foggiest idea except rumor has it that it is due

-
- The reason for this list was to show the progression of the chips in the
- two types of machines and the problems of both lines. Apple used only
- two main types of CPUs in its Macs; the weird 16/24/32-bit 68000 and the
- 32-bit 680x0s. While the 680x0s differ in FEATURES not data or address
- paths, keeping program compatibility across CPUs is not easy even in the
- Mac world. The IBM/clone side has FOUR different CPU types: 8088, 8086,
- 286, and the 386/486s ranging from 8/16-bits to full 32-bits. THEN add
- in the DX and SX difference. {What a mess.} Just looking at the
- IBM/clone CPUs it must be a NIGHTMARE to deal with the 8088, 8086, 286,
- 386DX, 386SX, 486DX, 486SX, 486DX2 and soon the P5 out there. Though,
- in all fairness to IBM the 8088 and 8086 are gone(or nearly gone as
- CPUs) and the 286 and 68000 are going (These last two are kept ONLY as
- CPUs for REALLY cheap machines) and with the end of the LC the 68020 bit
- it as a CPU. This leaves the 68030 and 68040 on the Mac side and the
- 386DX, 386SX, 486DX, 486DX2 and 486SX on the IBM/clone side. It still
- looks like a programming mess CPU wise on the IBM/clone side (A good
- example of this on the MAC side is when programers try to use features
- of the 68040 and are using a 68040 accelorator and find out the hard way
- the chip is a 68LC040 or an 68EC040 {somebody appears to have exactly
- this problem: the FPU calls are dieing all over the place})
-
-
- The CPU is the heart of the machine and the IBM/clone CPUs look like
- they had too many bypasses. A bad pun I know, but at least Apple keeps
- the CPUs that fail their tests [the 68LC040 and the 68EC040] out of
- their machines as MAIN CPUs{some accelorators however DO use them so
- WATCH OUT}. This is one of the things that tends to raise the Macs
- costs: Quality control. There ARE problems, like the Trust-like setup
- of Apple toward the Mac, but IBM and the clones have the same problem in
- the OS (Can you say Microsoft?). OS/2 is too much of a memory and disk
- space hog right now to break either DOS or Windows 3.1 and AIX needs the
- power of the 386s to run at its full potential [as A/UX 3.0 needs
- something the power of a fx(68030) or a Quatra(68040) to run as well as
- a 160MB hard drive and 8MB of RAM (Present Apple and IBM machines were
- NEVER designed to run UNIX as the MAIN OS anyway)] PowerOpen {a.k.a A/UX
- 4.0 is ahead of schedule to the point it COULD be out by the end of this
- year} and Windows NT {not before Oct 1993} are not out yet so thay are not
- even in the running.
-
- Taligent and Kaladia make all of this mute anyhow. The PowerPC chip is
- a RISC chip that Apple can run its OS on a the base Motorola 88000 RISC
- and IBM is planning to use the PowerPC in its version of the PowerPC 601
- (out in 1993/4) so soon a machine by BOTH companies will have the SAME
- CPU and THEN we will finally know the strength and weakness of the
- various OSs.

- I've got a device called the "nodem," originally made by adaptec. This is an
- Ethernet interface that attaches to the SCSI port. It's always worked fine,
- but
- the software is kind of weird; e.g., the installer puts a lot of special
- resources right into the System file.
-
- Anyway, I just upgraded from System 6 to System 7, and I can't install the

- any new software available from adaptec, who have apparently dropped the
- product. I haven't been able to get any information out of adaptec on this
- problem.
-
- Awhile back, I saw a catalog ad by a company that was selling what was clearly
- the (discontnued) nodem under another name. The company was called LRU
- Systems,
- Inc., of Saratoga, CA. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck with the phone
- number that I copied out of the ad, and directory assistance doesn't know the
- company.
-
- Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? Has someone else purchased the
- nodem product? [There are now a lot of these kind of devices on the market,
- and
- some look vaguely like the nodem.] Is this type of hardware generic enough
- that
- I might get by with software meant for some other's manufacturer's software?
- Maybe someone knows where I can reach LRU.

- Subject: Scheduling stacks
-
- A couple of years ago, maybe even more, some interest was expressed here
- in HyperCard stacks that would make schedules for sporting events, class
- assignments, etc.
-
- At the time, the only such stack I knew of had been developed by Jacques
- Courchesne at a community college in Ste-Foy, Quebec. The copy I requested
- >From him proved to be a thoroughly disabled demo; I couldn't see how it was
- supposed to work.
-
- In any case, I decided to create a couple of stacks on my own, one for my
- wife, who schedules classes in her Dept, and another for my Dept chair,
- who schedules a couple dozen faculty or more twice a year. The project
- was intended mainly to enable me to learn the rudiments of HyperTalk.
-
- The project has been successful in all respects. Now that the stacks
- are complete, though, I have to confess that I'm not sure how practical
- they are.
-
- The "user interface" is, at times, positively occult. On some cards,
- almost everything is a button. And I think it would require personal
- instruction as well as the help screens to learn where the buttons are
- and what they do.
-
- Curiously, the smaller stack seems to run more slowly than the larger,
- even though I've attempted to write time-saving traps into the main
- handlers.
-
- For those who expressed interest, early on, I can report this: the stacks
- are essentially elaborate recording devices; they make no decisions for you.
- In effect, they replace pencil & paper with the computer, and writer's cramp
- with mouse-finger fatigue.
-
- If it is possible to write HyperTalk script that makes decisions, I would
- appreciate any leads anyone can provide. My own feeling, from discussions
- with others as well as from my own experience, is that those of us who would
- like to have something that will make up baseball or class schedules, etc.
- might better look to an application written in an AI language.
-
- In short (too late), then, can HyperCard play chess? Aside from that,
- what programming language would you suggest for such a project? Prolog?
