- Okay, I'll try and be a bit more helpful this time !
-
- A Model 70 planar will fit into a 50Z case with no problems,
- and use all of
- the parts (power supply, disk drives, etc). Yes IBM parts
- are
- expensive, but you should be able to find a dealer who can
- supply a model 70
- board quite cheaply as a "spare part" though you may have to
- trade in your 50Z
- board to do this. Here in the UK the price of doing this is
- still high compared
- with the cost of another brand (equivalent) machine, but it
- isn't higher.
-
- No non IBM boards will fit into the PS/2 50 case without
- throwing away all of
- the IBM parts (and removing some of the support "lugs" and
- cutting holes in
- the case back too) - not really recomended!
-
- I wouldn't go for the model 70 upgrade path as this is not a
- "fast" machine
- by todays standards - the main problem from the users point
- of view is the slow
- 8 bit VGA graphics - if you want a new IBM you should go for
- the 56/57 SLC
- which 'look faster' than the 70 when using Windows and OS/2
- due to their high
- speed 16 bit graphics system (amoung other things !).
- Performance on these is
- similar to a 386DX/33. (Or, of course there are the 486
- machines !). Other
- brands are cheaper......
-
- If you want another IBM I'd wait until the new range is
- announced (next
- month?).
-
- Hope this was more helpful :-)
