-
- I also have been lucky -- I have an Adaptec 2372 RLL controller with a
- SEAGATE ST4144R (?) that is about 3 years old, and has been used as
- my UNIX uucp spool for almost that long [i.e., up all the time].
-
- I have a second drive on the same controller, a SEAGATE ST4096 (not really
- an RLL drive, but I've pushed it) that has been used for about 4 years,
- and as my usenet news spool for about 3 years [up all the time].
-
- Never the first problem with the 4144R; the 4096 had a lot of random
- errors when I first started using it with MS-DOS, but under my Microport
- UNIX (formattted as 1:2 interleave) it has been much better, and has
- not given me an error in quite a while (since UNIX has been finding/mapping
- out bad sectors). I don't blame the sector errors on SEAGATE -- I'm
- pushing the 4096 past its normal operating limits.
-
- I consider uucp feed spools and usenet news to be rather demanding use
- of a hard drive.
-
- I have another ST4096 that I bought second hand, being used as MFM for
- OS/2 2.0 -- never a hickup from it either. It was formerly used by a BBS
- running Xenix -- also a rather demanding application. I assume it is at least
- 4 years old.
-
- I have bought three SEAGATES through the mail -- one installed in a system --
- it worked, and two DOA. One of the two DOA's was replaced [Hard Drives Int'l]
- quickly with a working drive. The other DOA was bought from someone on the
- net and I am really annoyed with the person that I bought it from for not
- making good [but that's another story].
-
- My conclusion base on my experience is that if you get a Seagate to arrive
- in working condition, it will work fine. But they may be more succeptible
- to shipping damage than other brands. Or they may have poorer Q/A and
- ship more defectives, I don't know. I will not buy any more Seagates
- unless I am sure that the seller will stand behind them.
