  13. Thanks to the many who posted or e-mailed about my degaussing problem. I
  14. tried to respond to everyone who sent e-mail. If I missed you, please
  15. accept my apologies and my thanks.

  17. There were three common themes to the responses:
  18.  
  19. 1) Most modern color monitors have a built-in degausser that kicks in when
  20. the power is turned on. This appears to be the case with my monitor, since
  21. I noted some brief degaussing activity if I fiddled with the on/off switch
  22. just right. Repeated power cycling (on for 3 seconds, off for about 30)
  23. seems to have fixed things quite nicely - at least my letters are the same
  24. width all the way across my screen now and the color is more uniform.

  26. 2) If you really want to degauss things right, get your hands on a large,
  27. degaussing coil, or take it too a TV repair place which has such a device.
  28. This is the (mostly) fool-proof method if #1 is not available.

  30. 3) Bulk erasers/demagnetization wands might work, but they might make
  31. things worse. It depends how careful you are in making a uniform mag field
  32. pattern. Not recommended unless you are a hacker at heart :-)
