-
- The only instance that I have been successful in repairing a flyback
- transformer was in an old [1958?] Zenith B&W TV. In that case the
- insulation had deteriorated and I had arcing. Bathtub silicone cauking
- compound did the trick in that case. But the laminations are mostly covered
- up by the windings [flyback with laminations? I haven't looked recently
- but thought that flybacks usually used ferrite cores] and I don't think
- that you can get at them. Also note that color TV's and larger screen have
- higher voltages, so fixing them is harder.
-
- WARNING: the flyback is in the high voltage circuit (about 23KV) connected
- to the picture tube (via rectifiers). The picture tube is like a large
- capacitor and retains significant charge long after powering down. It is
- a shock hazzard -- talk to someone about safety precautions before you
- start fooling with the high voltage section of a TV or monitor. Household
- rubber gloves are NOT thick enough to give adequate protection.
