-
- I am using just such a machine right now. Providing that you have enough
- ram (4MB is good) a 16MHz SX with Hercules mono runs Windows very well
- indeed.
-

-
- In my (limited) experience svga cards seem actually slower than Hercules.
-
- >2) Add lots of ram (would RAM + a Cache be a good way to go?)
-
- Yes, Windows in 386 Enhanced mode is a dog on a 386DX/33 machine with 2MB
- but very usable on an SX/16 with 4MB.
-
- >3) Invest in coprocessors?
-
- I haven't tried this but have heard that Windows doesn't take advantage of
- a math coprocessor. Of course, if your users are spreadsheeting by all
- means get 387's.

-
- In summary, I'm happy with a 4MB 386SX/16 with mono-graphics (Hercules) video.
- It seems to repaint the screen and scroll as fast as an 8MB 386DX/33 with
- an ET4000 based SVGA that I use at work. The only real problem is that some
- applications use colors that map to black on black in monochrome (this is
- has so far only happened with shareware and freeware apps .)
