- The 486 DX2 runs internally at 66 megahertz and sends/receives data at 33
- MHz. Computer makers can use the chip in computers that were designed for the
- 33 MHz 486, without having to update the rest of the PC to 66-MHz speed. By
- doubling the chips internal clock, Intel says the microprocessor can speed up
- the PC's processing by 70%, even though the rest of the computer continues to
- operate at 33 MHz. "This is our highest performance processor right now," said
- Lew Paceley, an Intel marketing manager. More than 30 computer makers were
- expected to announce Monday they would make models powered by the new chip,
- Intel said, including IBM, Compaq, Dell and Tandy. The new chip costs $682
- each in orders of 1,000 or more. Intel said it has shipped more than 20,000 of
- them already. Earlier this year, Intel released a chip that operates at 50 Mhz
- internally, but half that speed when communicating with the rest of the
- computer. That chip is designed to substitute for Intel's 486 microprocessor
- that runs at 25 megahertz. Intel said it has shipped more than 300,000 of
- these chips so far, exceeding its expectations.
