- A couple of weeks ago I bought a Marstek 4096 colour scanner.
- It was 598,- DM (approx. 400 US$, but hardware is generally more expensive
- over here, so might be cheaper where you are).
-
- It reads 4096 colour values in 200 dpi or 64 grey values in 400 dpi maximum,
- and it also has a text and 'dithered colour' mode (the latter, I don't see any
- use in). The software included isn't for windows, unfortunately, and I had
- some trouble installing it. One simple scanning programme, one that scans
- and enhances, and an OCR software.
-
- Don't expect any miracles of its quality, but it's better than I had expected.
- I use the colour mode most of the time, for generating gifs and backgrounds
- for my desktop. As gif supports 256 colours only (and so do most VGAs), 4096
- values isn't too little. You best overdo the results with some other enhancing
- software (Photostyler isn't bad). The scan results from good originals come
- out brilliantly (except for some noise generated by the scanner that results in
- little green and blue spots). You have to move your scanner slowly and evenly,
- so some patience is necessary :).
-
- The Logi Scanman retails at the same price here. It comes with windows
- compatible software and supports 256 grey values, with less noise probably (?).
- But no colour, and that's what I want :)
