- I know that this has been hashed out here before but could
- someone tell me the status of SoundSmith 1.0? If I remember correctly
- (that is all my simms are properly seated) I recall someone in the
- know saying that SS 1.0 will NOT be released because Hubert is pissed
- off at the low turn out in terms of shareware fees he has recieved.
- SoundSmith is great and so (*2) is NT but they lack one crucial item
- that for me is essential....MIDI! I regularly use SynthLab (which does
- have excellent sound) to make music. I'd like to use larger samples
- than Synthlab allows. It would also be nice to do waveform editing.
- The GS NEEDS a NT w/MIDI! A friend of mine traded up his trusty Apple
- II for an Amiga. I asked him why and he said, 'To do music with it'. I
- was stunned. I asked why he'd passed over the GS since he had a world
- of IIe knowledge behind him. 'There isn't any good music software' was
- his reply. He was impressed by NT and Synthlab but both have SERIOUS
- shortcomings, no MIDI for NT makes it a fun toy but utterly lacking
- in usefullness for making serious music. Its ridiculous trying to
- enter music in on the comp keyboard instead of my CZ keyboard.
- Synthlab DOES give MIDI but its worthless as anything but a digital
- recording machine. If I make a mistake on the drums say I have to
- record the WHOLE track over! I CAN'T believe there isn't something
- better for the GS! The GS is the King of Sound. It Should be mated
- with the appropriate Queen of Software. How can the Amiga be deemed
- as such a powerful music platform? Well, ease of use IS a major plus.
- It is VERY simple to create instruments and waveforms from Basic DATA
- statements! There is NO excuse for the hideous diffeculty of
- manipulating music/sound on the GS. The GS IS the more powerful
- music machine but the Amiga has succesfully stolen our thunder. :|
- Anyone use MusicWriter GS by Pyware? Is it worth the
- investment? I mean, can I get at least Soundsmith level instruments
- in and out of it?
-
- OK. At heres a list of what I think a Professional music
- system should have on the GS:
-
- - MIDI
- - NT like instruments (swapping in and out of DOC to get
- bigger sized instruments)
- - A Music Studio style 'Notes on Staff' visual, w/printouts.
- - A Waveform Creator/Editor.
- - Synthlab Quality sound (STILL the best even for its limited
- number of instruments.
-
- Thats it I guess. Its all been done but not all together.
- I love my GS (kiss kiss, hug hug) but its musical potential is
- sorely underdeveloped. (Yes I know, why don't *I* write the above?
- Well I'm trying to learn C and Assembly as fast as I can. Its not
- easy, Maybe all you hardcore GS owners will see it sometime in the
- next several years...)
