- I have a ROM 01, and I've recently discovered a problem that seems to be an
- interaction between my power supply, mouse, and internal speaker.
- What happens is this - whenever I'm in a //e application that uses the
- mouse (say ProTerm 3), an amazingly annoying high-pitched whine comes from
- the internal speaker. I've been informed that this is a problem with reading
- the mouse (seems to be only the emulated-//e mouse?), and confirmed this -
- if I set the Control Panel Slots so that slot 4 is "Your Card" instead of
- "Mouse Port", the noise goes away (and I have no mouse).
- I didn't notice this problem until recently because I had an InnerDrive as my
- power supply, and I guess it's more powerful and/or cleaner than this
- silver-metal Apple stock supply (were the faulty ones silver or bronze/gold
- coloured? Mine is a January '87, 00 Woz). Now that I've sold the drive, I'm
- forced to use the stock supply.
- Does anyone know a way to stop this problem without buying a heavy-duty power
- supply, or wearing earplugs? I'm told this is a common ROM 01 problem; is it
- the Ensoniq or the internal speaker connection that's responsible for it? If
- it's the Ensoniq, I could presumably do that mod that was discussed for
- cutting the Ensoniq->Internal Speaker connection while leaving the stereo
- output and softswitch sounds intact (there's no noise on the stereo line). The
- noise does come out the headphone jack (I'm killing it now with a null plug in
- the jack) so it might be the Ensoniq. Could someone please email me the
- specifics of the mod I mentioned above?
-
- Alternately is there a way to fix the problem from the other end, possible by
- insulating some chip (ADB chip?) that's picking up the noise when the mouse
- is used? Or insulating the Ensoniq for that matter...I'd _really_ like to
- clean this up if anyone can help. I'd like to do so without having to spring
- for a ROM 03 board and the attendant difficulties with FTA demos et al.
