- The hardest part of creating a animation program is producing a high
- quality, flexible renderer that is still fast enough for production.

- The idea behind RenderMan is this: you would only learn _one_ rendering
- program, which would (ideally) work with scenes from Lightwave, Imagine,
- Real-3D, Caligari, etc. Every one of these programs have different strengths,
- but none of them have all of the features and quality needed in a truely
- professional rendering program. PIXAR knows more about rendering than any
- one else, and they have incorporated everything they know into one program.
-
- If it was available, you could not afford _not_ to get it.

-
- For the price, many of the programs are acceptable, but none can even
- begin to touch the power, quality, flexibility and speed of RenderMan.
-
- Price is a complex thing. If I were to spend the time needed to learn
- Imagine, to get at the wonderous things it's fans insist are there, it
- would cost me many times the price of the program. My time is valuable;
- I produce, on average, a 4 to 10 second logo animation in a day. I build
- it, render it overnight, and the video engineer lays it off to tape the
- next morning. The program I use cost 10k. It has paid for itself _many_
- times over.
-
- If RenderMan had been available, Amiga developers could have
- spent the time improving to modeling and animation in their programs,
- instead of re-inventing the wheel. Caligari has the most (IMO) advanced
- interface because Octree purchased the Rendition rendering package from
- another company that _only_ writes renderers. If JourneyMan had better,
- faster renderer it could stand a very good chance of putting Alias out
- of business (I'm _not_ kidding.)

- MacRenderMan was selling at SIGGRAPH for around that.
