  18.     Acorn have this week revealed two new machines to developers........
  19.     
  20.     1) A new budget home 'games' machine weighing in at around 400 pounds
  21.        (provisionally called the A1000).

  25.     2) A new colour portable is already being designed that will use
  26.         an active matrix display system and will probably contain the new
  27.            ARM610 chip.

  31.     Specifications for A1000

  34.     12Mhz ARM2 CPU (running at approx 7 MIPS)
  35.     2Mb 12 Mhz ram (upgradeable to 4Mb)
  36.     1.6Mb Floppy drive
  37.     RISC OS 3.10
  38.     Two 9-pin D standard joystick ports
  39.     RCA outputs for stereo sound
  40.  
  41.     Optional 40 or 80 Mb IDE internal hard drive.
  42.  
  43.     Plus all the usual ports found on the A3000.

  45.     NOTE:
  46.     There are no internal expansion capabilities.    
  47.     The internal mini podule slot has been removed from the machine.

  49.     The price has been set at around 400 pounds.

  51.     Acorn do not anticipate that this machine will replace the A3000 in 
  52.     education and so the A3000 will continue production for the
  53.     'forseeable' future. It has also been said that the A3000 may take 
  54.     a further price cut.

  56.     Acorn further announced its intention to produce a more powerful
  57.     colour portable computer aimed for release fourth quarter 1993.

  59.     Also discussed were new versions of the RISC Ix drivers to enable 
  60.     the new hardware platforms to support Unix.

  62.     Rumours also abound of a new super Unix/RISC OS based workstation
  63.     (the A7000 perhaps?) sporting full 24 bit graphics, 32Mb ram and
  64.     yet another version of RISC OS.

  66.     Also discussed was the final release date of RISC OS 3.10 for 
  67.     current RISC OS 2.00 users and any further bug fixes that need to 
  68.     be incorporated. Acorn anticipate that shipping of RISC OS 3.10 will
  69.     conincide with the first volume shipments of the A4 in September.
