- QWK is an offline, packetized, mail reading technology originally developed
- by Mark Herring (nicknamed "Sparky") of Sparkware. The original platform
- was the PC compatible. However, as a result of the incredible proliferation
- of the QWK de-facto standard, it becomes HIGHLY desirable to write QWK readers
- for all sorts of platforms. Although these BBS's may be PC based, some, like
- Channel 1 in Massachusetts, have loads and loads of Unix software available--
- and lots of Unix support forums as well. By using QWK, you don't have to
- read the forum while online, you simply download a mail packet (that is prepared
- upon user command), then read it at your leisure. You then upload a reply
- packet when you are done.
-
- There are currently two Unix-based QWK readers other than UReader: ATP, by
- Thomas McWilliams, and QWIX, by ????. Note that on most QWK-capable BBS's that
- mail also refers to public forums. The concept of separation between mail
- and news is not binding in that world (I, even though I run a Usenet site here,
- also use certain BBS's that are QWKified HEAVILY, so I am used to both
- worlds. And, they are worlds different!).
-
- When I saw your message, and the implied query regarding QWK's, I decided to
- post this in addition to the e-mail to Mr. Snyder.
