- Folk,
-
- Since the MD5/4.4BSD mods have stabilized, I have deleted all the prior
- stuff and established the latest "official" (?) distribution of
- xntp3.tar.Z under that name. This has a couple of minor patches,
- including one that affected WWVB driver support (refclock_wwvb.c)
- and others found necessary for multi-architecture/OS portability.
- This establishes a new baseline for patches, a new batch of which
- have been threatened by people cleaning up their code, removing
- deadwood and other campground policing.
-
- For those using the "prefer" keyword announced previously, a minor
- change in behavior results in the selected peer "sticking" to the
- preferred peer at all times this peer is included in the final
- candidate list and is at the lowest stratum in this list. This reduces
- incidental clockhopping in cases where a number of highly accurate,
- low jitter peers compete for selection. Use this with GPS receivers
- and FDDI media.
-
- If you think this finick is overzealous, consider our DECstation 5000/240s
- that coo with each other over Ethernet with 2.1 ms roundtrip delays.
- Measured times (authdelay) to compute the message digest with both DES
- and MD5 for various machines are
-
- suthentication delays (us) DES MD5
- DECstation 5000/240 cowbird 39 81
- Sun4c/50 IPX malarky 47 94
- Sun4c/65 SS1+ pogo 72 159
- Sun4c/40 IPC grundoon 73 163
- Sun4c/60 SS1 albert 95 199
-
- Splitting the milliseconds is easy with the '240 birds. Send me your
- additions to this list (use: authspeed auth.samplekeys in the authstuff
- subdirectory) and I'll award prizes.
