- I've been unable to get the "hardware=appletalk" configuration option of
- NCSA/BYU Telnet 2.5 to work in our environment. HELP!
-
- We run Macs on both LocalTalk and Ethernet, and have a Fastpath-4
- running K-Star 9.1 as a bridge between them.
-
- Macs connected to the Ethernet (Asante NuBus cards) work just fine, with
- either "hardware=ether" or "hardware=mactcp", and a fixed (manually-
- assigned) IP address.
-
- Macs connected to LocalTalk work fine with "hardware=mactcp", with
- MacTCP configured for server-based address assignment. The K-box hands
- out an address from its dynamic range, and the connections work fine.
- The dynamically-assigned IP address shows up in the "arp -a" report as
- being mapped to the K-box EtherNet address.
-
- However, they do not work correctly with "hardware=appletalk", and
- either server-based or fixed IP address assignment. TELNET seems to
- acquire an IP address from the K-box, but its attempts to send packets
- to the Unix hosts through the K-box drop into a black hole. I don't
- ever observe the K-box "LocalTalk activity" light flash. The
- dynamically-assigned IP address doesn't show up in the "arp -a" report,
- unless I do something on the Sun such as ping the address... in which
- case, the address appears in arp -a (the K-box is responding to the arp
- packet) but the pings receive no response.
-
- All I can conclude, is that the NCSA/BYU 2.5 IP-in-DDP driver isn't
- transmitting the packets to the gateway properly. I haven't been able
- to figure out why not.
-
- What am I missing, folks?
-
- On a related subject - is there any one document which describes the
- meanings (and perhaps even the interactions) of all of the K-Star
- option-flag settings? Is there any way to control these option settings
- from within an atalkatab configuration file, or can they only be set
- from within the FastPath Manager?
