- I found the following on the IBM Developers Assistance Program BBS

-
- Disk Compression software available for OS/2 2.0!!!
-
- A company called Proportional Software has developed (and
- received an award from IBM at the Windows+PM conference in
- Boston for) a disk compression device driver for OS/2 2.0!
-
-
- Their phone number is 1-800-666-4OS2, and their fax number
- (phone is pretty busy) is 1-800-955-4OS2.
-
- Price is $129.95, $99.95 thru December.
-
- More details:
-
- The product is called DCF/2(Data Compression Facility).
-
- From their data sheet(Proportional Software Corporation):
-
- Proportional Software's new DCF/2 is an "on-the-fly" disk compression
- facility for OS/2 2.0. It's fast, reliable disk compression
- techniques work with all logical OS/2 2.0 disk devices and are
- compatible with all types and sizes of disks.
-
- ...
-
- The DCF/2 automatically tokenizes repeating strings and collapses byte
- ranges into compressed, logical disk sectors(LDS). The DCF/2 manages
- a highly-optimized Disk Allocation Table(DAT) in the DCF/2 virtual disk
- file which allows Compression Level 1(CL1) algorithms to achieve local
- disk access speeds. When OS/2 requests disk information, the DCF/2
- uses the DAT to access the LDS's, and the information is decompressed
- into its original format. CL2 adds to this with an additional layer of
- tokenizing, collapsing, and crunching of the data into LDS's which
- results in addittional disk savings with slightly slower access times.
-
- COMMENT ADDED BY IBM person who called up the company ....
-
- "The only negative was that he said the product had not been
- extensively tested, so I would be real cautious about putting on
- your machine, unless you are willing to lose data."
-
- Hmmm....
