- The answer to your question #1 is that you shouldn't have to worry about
- reinstalling your whole OS. I don't know how you got the older version
- of UNPACK, nor is it that important. The problem you had was that when
- the files are PACKed, the PACK program places the PACK version number in
- the header of the PACKed file. Then, only the corresponding version of UNPACK
- can UNPACK the file. The program is IBM internal, and not too bright, I'm
- afraid. Even when we ship new versions of software with no change to the
- PACK/UNPACK program they create a new version of PACK/UNPACK. As a result,
- you can have the exact same UNPACK program (but with a different version
- number) which is unable to function on a file! Fortunately, I believe that
- there is a trend within IBM to go towards more industry standard compression
- programs in the future.
