  10. Shutdown didn't do anything, and startup started up a lot of old programs that
  11. behaved strangely.  What I did was to hold down left shift-left ctrl-f1 during
  12. startup.  I pushed them down when the screen went white, and held them until
  13. the disk light went off and stayed off for a while (the screen was still white.
  14. The Readme, where I got this idea, says hold them until icons appear, but
  15. I don't think they would have.)  This killed all the funny programs except a
  16. seamless Windows one; fixed their icons; and made shutdown work again.
