- Guy:
-
- I recently completed a personal project, porting an application from
- 16 OS/2 1.3 compiled with MSC 6.00a, to 32 bit using C Set/2. Net
- result: no change in performance!
-
- Why?
-
- The application is a very simple, brain damaged grep-type thingy.
-
- Reason there is no performance improvement in the 32 bit version,
- seems to be because both version of the application are outrunning the
- hardware! I am running a 386sx-20 system, with a Ultrastor ESDI
- caching controller (4 Mb onboard) and an ATI VGA Wonder+ video at
- 800x600x16 with Joel's video driver. I suspect it is the disk that
- the apps are outrunning, since this machine has a standard ISA bus.
-
- One other comment - going to a caching controller and a high speed
- ESDI drive did not improve the base performance of this system,
- because both the drive/controller and the motherboard can outrun the
- buss.
-
- In the case of the 32 bit graphics engine, perhaps the only people who
- will see a bit performance are those using very high speed busses
- (local bus?) or EISA video controllers.
-
- In other words, for once the software (OS/2) is actually ahead of the
- hardware! Something unique in the computer world....
