- OS/2 2.0 SURPASSES ONE MILLION SHIPMENT MILESTONE
-
- WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., August 12, 1992 . . . IBM today announced that its
- new software product, OS/2* Version 2.0, has vaulted past the one
- million shipment mark. Historically popular with corporate users,
- early indications are that OS/2 is also gaining widespread acceptance
- in the end-user community as a result of its power, reliability and
- ease-of-use.
-
- "OS/2 2.0 is, without question, a technical triumph," says Jim
- Cannavino, general manager of IBM's Personal Systems line of business.
- "We have built a significant base in a short amount of time. OS/2
- 2.0's market acceptance is one of the industry's most notable develop-
- ments in 1992."
-
- To commemorate their on-going support and commitment to OS/2,
- Caterpillar will be presented with the one millionth copy at the
- Windows & OS/2 Show at Boston's World Trade Center, August 18-21.
-
- Currently, Caterpillar is utilizing OS/2 in several strategic areas,
- including dealer applications and migration of internal application
- development to the intelligent workstation. The Executive Information
- System, a LAN-based application used by Caterpillar's senior manage-
- ment, is also running on OS/2 2.0.
-
- According to Saliba Shanine, manager of corporate LAN services,
- Caterpillar has selected OS/2 2.0 as its strategic desktop operating
- system. "We have decided on OS/2 2.0 as our corporate strategy for
- several reasons. First, OS/2 2.0 provides support for the 32-bit
- infrastructure of today's hardware platform and the next generation of
- desktop applications, while still protecting our earlier investments,"
- says Shanine. "Because integration and compatibility with other plat-
- forms are very important, we feel OS/2 2.0 is the only PC operating
- system available today that can satisfy our needs."
-
- STRONG INDUSTRY COMMITMENT
-
- "Computer Associates is wholly committed to the OS/2 platform based on
- the requests and feedback from our clients," says Charles B. Wang,
- chairman, Computer Associates. "Clearly, the one million milestone
- shows that OS/2 will continue to be a viable mission critical,
- enterprise-wide solution."
-
- TO CONTINUE THE OS/2 MOMENTUM, IBM RECENTLY ANNOUNCED A NEW PRICING
- promotion. Between August 1 and October 31, 1992, users who call the
- 1-800-3-IBM-OS2 phone number can purchase OS/2 for the following
- prices: Windows** upgrade $79; DOS upgrade $99 and first time buyers
- $149.
-
- OS/2 is an advanced 32-bit operating system that supports DOS, Windows
- and OS/2 applications in a single package. This advanced platform
- offers true multitasking -- allowing concurrent execution of multiple
- software programs -- and enables users to choose from tens of thou-
- sands of applications, providing access to a tremendously broad range
- of software programs.
