  25. As stated in our recent postings to this newsgroup, most of
  26. hotels located in the nearby area of the Security Symposium's
  27. headquarters hotel the Sheraton) are sold out.   The Association 
  28. would very much like to urge you  and other attendees to stay at 
  29. the the symposium's headquarters (Shearton), for the following reason:

  31. USENIX events place a heavy demand on hotel meeting space. 
  32. What USENIX does is make an agreement with the hotel where the 
  33. meeting is being held that in exchange for a guaranteed minimum 
  34. number of rooms rented by attendees, the hotel will throw in meeting 
  35. space and other services at no direct cost to USENIX.   These
  36. contracts contain penalty clauses if we fail to fulfill our commitment 
  37. to the hotel.  The hotel industry is fairly close knit, and word gets 
  38. out quickly about groups that can't live up to their contracts.  Such 
  39. groups may have trouble getting space, or may have to pay a higher rate.

  41. There are a couple of consequences of this arrangement.  One is that it 
  42. is important that when you make your reservation that you state that
  43. it is in conjunction with the USENIX Conference, and that you pay the
  44. USENIX rate, so we get credit towards fulfilling our room block 
  45. commitment.  (Even if you use a large corporation's discounted rate, 
  46. it will not count as a credit towards the USENIX commitment).  Another
  47. consequence is that a widespread defection from our headquarters hotel
  48. will lead to higher registration fees for everybody.

  50. USENIX does its utmost to get the lowest possible conference
  51. rates at the headquarters hotel.  However, recognizing that not 
  52. everyone can, or wants to, be in the headquarters
  53. hotel(s), we try to choose sites that have less expensive hotels in the
  54. neighborhood.  We also encourage roomsharing (comp.org.usenix.roomshare
  55. is good for this purpose).
