- ANSI X3J14 FORTH TECHNICAL PROPOSAL
- (X3J14 dpANS-3, March 1992)
-
- TITLE: Add clarifying text re. cross-compilers
-
- SECTION: 4.1 ANS Forth Programming System
-
- SUMMARY: This text clarifies the status of cross-compilers under
- the dpANS.
-
- PROPOSAL: Add the following text to section 4.1:
-
- "An ANS Forth System must be capable of executing,
- interpretively, all of the words from the Core word set
- and any words included from the optional or extension
- word sets, except those words designated in the
- glossary with the 'C' attribute (see section 5.1).
-
- An ANS Forth System must be capable of executing,
- interpretively, any newly defined words which are
- created in accordance with the rules for an ANS Forth
- Program (see section 4.2).
-
- No cross-compiler can be labeled an ANS Forth System
- unless it is capable of executing, during the
- compilation process, words defined for the target
- system which conform to the rules for an ANS Forth
- Program."
-
- RELATED PROPOSALS: "Can there be ANS Forth cross-compilers?"
-
- DISCUSSION: Recent discussions with members of the Technical
- Committee have made it evident that the status of cross-
- compilers is unclear under the dpANS. This proposal adds
- language to the document that explicitly states the require-
- ments for cross-compilers in relation to ANS Forth.
-
- This proposal represents the best synthesis of the informal
- opinions I have received. If this interpretation is incor-
- rect (see related request for clarification), please substi-
- tute language that represents the true state of affairs.
- However, some explanatory text must be added on the subject
- of cross-compilers.
