  17. TITLE:  Add clarifying text re. cross-compilers
  18.  
  19. SECTION:  4.1 ANS Forth Programming System
  20.  
  21. SUMMARY:  This text clarifies the status of cross-compilers under
  22.      the dpANS.
  23.  
  24. PROPOSAL:  Add the following text to section 4.1:
  25.  
  26.           "An ANS Forth System must be capable of executing,
  27.           interpretively, all of the words from the Core word set
  28.           and any words included from the optional or extension
  29.           word sets, except those words designated in the
  30.           glossary with the 'C' attribute (see section 5.1).
  31.  
  32.           An ANS Forth System must be capable of executing,
  33.           interpretively, any newly defined words which are
  34.           created in accordance with the rules for an ANS Forth
  35.           Program (see section 4.2).
  36.  
  37.           No cross-compiler can be labeled an ANS Forth System
  38.           unless it is capable of executing, during the
  39.           compilation process, words defined for the target
  40.           system which conform to the rules for an ANS Forth
  41.           Program."

  43. RELATED PROPOSALS:  "Can there be ANS Forth cross-compilers?"
  44.  
  45. DISCUSSION:  Recent discussions with members of the Technical
  46.      Committee have made it evident that the status of cross-
  47.      compilers is unclear under the dpANS.  This proposal adds
  48.      language to the document that explicitly states the require-
  49.      ments for cross-compilers in relation to ANS Forth.
  50.  
  51.      This proposal represents the best synthesis of the informal
  52.      opinions I have received.  If this interpretation is incor-
  53.      rect (see related request for clarification), please substi-
  54.      tute language that represents the true state of affairs.
  55.      However, some explanatory text must be added on the subject
  56.      of cross-compilers.
