- For a specialty payroll application, the company I work for requires a
- Motorola Sync-Up modem. These are specialty bisynconous modems, which range
- from 2400 to 9600 baud.
-
- The bank with the payroll system gave us the name of two dealers to talk to
- for a price quote. I called each and recieved some price quotes, and was quite
- shocked at the costs involved.
-
- I'm fully aware that these are specialty modems, and that they may require
- special knowledge, and I'm aware that we are going to pay more for these
- modems. However, I and the company I deal with try to avoid proprietary, over
- the barrel type situations as much as possible, so I have a few questions:
-
- 1. I was led to believe there are other modems, manufactured by companies like
- Racal-Vadic and Multitech, which are compatible with the Motorola models. Are
- they completely compatible, cheaper, and would we have any problems?
-
- 2. One of the things that bothered me was how little information the dealers
- offered. They tried to make everything seem mysterious. What I was wondering
- is if anyone knows the specific terminal program required for this type of
- application, and also if there is any major difference between installing this
- kind of modem and a standard Hayes compatible modem (of which I have installed
- many).
-
- 3. Finally, I am looking for any dealers in Toronto, Ontario, Canada who might
- be able to sell me one of these modems at a more reasonable price with
- reasonable support. Among other things, the dealers who quoted us wanted to
- charge us $275 and $250 for installation alone, and this is something I could
- more than likely handle. I realize that in many instances you "get what you
- pay for" but I have also encountered many companies which offer goods at more
- reasonable prices with competent service. Surely there can't be that much
- difference between a standard 14400 baud fax/modem and a 4800 baud
- bisynchronous modem to justify a $1800 price difference! These are 1986
- prices.
-
- Thanks for any responses. Please reply via email, I will summarize if
- warranted.
