- : Since GIF and ZIP files are already compressed, your V.42bis
- : compression cannot make them smaller, and may actually make them
- : larger. Thus the best throughput that you can expect is 9600 baud
- : with these files, even though your computer - modem connection is at
- : 38.4. Given this, I think that 900+ CPS is about as good as you can
- : expect. You might get slightly faster CPS by turning modem
- : compression off when moving precompressed files around.
-
- Wrong! I am running Telix 3.15 over an ATI 9600etc/e modem and I
- reliably get around 1080 cps ZMODEM downloads of ZIP files. I actually
- get 1100+ using YMODEM-G (I think that's the one), but it leaves out
- end-to-end error checking that will detect errors between the modem and
- the computer that can occasionally happen. I only get 1800 cps with
- uncompressed text files, but I think that is a limitation of the UNIX
- comms driver at the other end.
-
- One important thing to check is that the modem at the other end is also
- running V.42bis. When I download from a system that is only V.32 (no
- V.42bis), I only get around 900 to 920 cps.
-
- The original poster asked about XON/XOFF. I would suggest disabling
- XON/XOFF completely, and using RTS/CTS instead (do this in both the
- modem and in Telix). Also, Telix now comes with a program to
- automatically configure most of the popular models of modem. Try
- downloading a copy of this (the latest is on their BBS).
