- I really wish that all devices came with schematics, as fixing them
- without is a pain. That said, a halfway competant hacker can trace out the
- average modem scheamtic in a couple of days. Now for some good sources of
- schematics for modems:
- 1) The AM7910 (Advanced micro devices), or EF7910 (SGS-Thompson?) data
- sheet. This was probably the first single-chip modem, does 300/300 and
- 1200/75 rates, BELL and CCITT. seem to be some application circuits on the
- data sheet. Easy to use, if you don't mind a slow modem
- 2) Sierra Semiconductors do a 2-chip hayes modem. There are 2 versions -
- one is for an external (RS232) modems, the other for a PC-slot modem. The
- chips and data sheets are available in England from Verospeed. The chip
- numbers I have are SC11016 (modem), SC11028 (RS232 controller), SC11037
- (PC-bus controller). I guess you cna get them elsewhere
- 3) Somebody already mentioned Ciarcia's 300 baud modem
- 4) The Tandy Model 100 technical refernece manual. This laptop included a
- 300 baud modem built round the motorola 4412 (? - from memory) chip. Full
- circuit of the machine is in the techref
- 5) Electoronics - the Maplin Magazine did a circuit for a 300 baud CCitt
- modem in isue 4 (I think). It may be worth a look. I think it used the
- Motorla 4412 for transmit, and an separtes PLL for receive.
- 6) Texas telecom Databook (1987 is the one I have) contains aplication
- circuits for a 300/300 and 1200/75 modem
- 7) This is stretching the definiton of modem a bit, but RTTY boxes are
- similar to modems in some respects. There have been circuits for those in
- magazines over the years. Again, there were 2 in the Maplin Magazine.
-
- I have no connection with any of the above companies, except for being a
- satisfied user of their products.
-
- Now for a pet flame about a Modem Manufacturer and a question
- I have a Dowty Quattro 2400 bps modem. I, too wanted the schematic. When I
- phoned up Dowty, they said 'People who buy our products are not capable of
- repairing them' . I have been doing electronics for 20 years, digital for
- 15 years. I am capable of repairing all the rest of my computer hardware
- (including a DEC PDP11/45 with over 2000 IC's). Why is the modem so
- difficult? Why do Dowty insult their customers like that?. Anyway, does
- anyon know what the RF5616 IC (There are 2 of them, in positions U32 and
- U33 of the PCB) is. They are in 8pin DIP's, seem to have 3 power lines,
- some kind of enable input, a clock input and an analogue In and out. I
- can't find them in any data books. Does anyone know for sure?
- I think they're some kind of filter.
