  14. I'm not really familiar with the idea of fellowships- how do you get
  15. one in the first place?

  17. In our program they are competitive--you might be given one on the
  18. basis of exceptionally high GRE scores (!!) and entering GPA.
  19. Minority status can help here, too.  Others are based on research
  20. proposals later on in the program--those are REALLY competitive,
  21. because you're up against grads submitting research proposals from
  22. ALL disciplines.
