- Hi Elizabeth.. Firstly, I think the ought in anyone's mind can come from
- several sources, one being social, others may be due to the particular
- life experiences of that person. My theory on why ideal-actual discre-
- pancy leads to dejection more than anxiety is that an ideal is a goal
- one sets for themselves (based on whatever).. not fitting your own
- standards and not reaching your goal means you're letting yourself down,
- so your spirits are low, you feel dejected.. Ought-actual works on guilt
- and expectancy. Ought standards are minimum standards, ones you really
- SHOULD be able to reach, ones you should perhaps have without trying, or
- maybe shouldn't be so hard to achieve, etc.. at any rate, these are the
- least that are expected by yourself and others to fit the bill as a
- person. Not reaching those would create more anxiety than not reaching
- an ideal standard. Anxiety might come from several sources (I'm a total
- f--k up, I'll never make it in life.. I'm a bad girl and am going to
- get into trouble.. I am not out-going and funny, who will want to date
- me?.. etc).
-
- Perhaps an appropriate example, given the current debate over GREs, would
- be:
-
- 1) My ideal is that I become a top Psychotherapist with a PhD.
- 2) I ought to AT LEAST score a 600 in each area of the GRE to get into grad
- school.
-
- 1) I get through grad school. I am not yet the top Psychotherapist
- around - I feel down; will I ever get there?
- 2) I take my first GRE and don't score well in the verbal. My score
- is around 500, I should AT LEAST score OVER 600. Am I STUPID? Do
- I even have the BASICS of what it takes? CAN I get there? -- anxiety.
-
- This is how I see it. Correct me if I've misinterpreted your question.
- Hope it helps some.
