- As part of my Masters Degree I want to look at how students can take more
- control of their learning environments by establishing collegiate work
- groups or networks amongst themselves.
-
- At the moment I am conducting a case study amongst 30 Graduate Social
- Science students a the University of Tasmania. As part of this case study
- I am looking at the differences between how groups perform on a given task
- (in this case the development of a data base) under different communication
- conditions.
-
- Ten individuals make up the first group that use conventional methods to
- communicate (i.e. talking face-to-face, memos, group meetings) Group two
- also consists of ten individuals who are only allowed to use computer
- mediated communication amongst themselves (i.e. E-mail, Talk, IRC) The
- remaining ten people will work by themselves on this project and as such
- they will be allowed to use what ever communications method they want to
- contact each other.
-
- I want to discover if there are any major differences in both productivity
- and group dynamics when conventional communication methods are used and
- when comunication is via computer.
-
- I am also hoping to discover any possible problems with both methods and if
- there is an effective way that one or a combination of both methods can be
- used to produce a work group organisation that is not only productive but
- collegiate in nature.
-
- To add to the case study that I am looking at for this univeristy I would like
- to hear from any people who regularly use IRC as a way to communicate with
- a work/study partner or group who would be interested to use IRC as a
- communication meduim in a future project to be completed soon.
-
- If there is anyone interested in being involved in a case study of this
- nature would they contact me and I will send them more information on my
- Thesis itself and what I would like them to do as part of the study I am
- conducting
