- The following article was posted to this newsgroup some time ago. I have
- used the product called HyperTies and consider it a very good program.
- Independent studies done a few years back (admittedly when there were
- less of such programs around) have shown that HyperTies was quickest to
- master browsing and authoring. You can call them at 800-229-TIES.

- Recently there have been several requests for the names of hypertext
- engines that run on PC's. Here's a list that may help people to track
- down something to use.
-
- The range of capabilities of these programs is very large. Some require
- large disks and hi-powered machines, some run on the PCjr. Some provide
- tools for authoring, some allow authoring with any ASCII text editor. I
- accept any engine that lets me present data in a sequence that the
- reader chooses as hypertext.
-
- These engines use differing concepts for the hypertext database, ranging
- from an ASCII file per frame to a compiled file for all frames. They
- also vary in their treatment of links, use of aliases, methods of
- marking link origins, flexibility of reference to destination, and sense
- of forward and backward in the collection of frames.
-
- Creating good hypertexts requires organizing ideas and meaning into a
- useful, probably intuitively understandable, network so the reader
- quickly learns to move around effectively. Engines don't do that. Nor
- do they translate books into hypertext, nor organize your collection of
- research data. What's more, engines don't automatically make your
- graphics files in the little-known HIEROGL.YPH format run on all the
- graphics cards your users found on the floor. Keep an eye peeled for
- the killer engine, but in the meantime work in monochrome with the
- simplest graphics you can make do with.
-
- The items in this list include hypertext engines, programs with
- hypertext capabilities, and some related tools and demonstration
- hypertexts. This is extracted from my current database and may be
- flawed since the sources are not consistent.
-
- If you can add to, correct, or otherwise improve this data, please send
- email to olson%mydual.uucp@alliant.com and I'll try to update the list.
- I'm always interested in people's experience of any of these programs.
