Social Studies Idea #5
Charting Producers
Objective:
The students will make a chart of fruits and vegetables, major
U. S. producers, and countries in the world that ship fruits
or vegetables to U. S. markets.
Rationale:
After your class uses "5 A Day Adventures" to explore the
Fruits and Vegetables Speak Up section, this activity can be
used to reinforce top U. S. producers of various fruits and
vegetables, and also identify major countries that ship fruits
and vegetables to U. S. supermarkets. They will learn that
even some of the smallest countries (such as Costa Rica) are
major producers of popular fruit (bananas) we buy in our
markets every day.
Materials:
"5 A Day Adventures" CD-ROM
Introduction:
Explain to students that certain fruits and vegetables grow
best in certain areas of our country. Different areas of the
world are also best suited for particular fruits and
vegetables.
Group/Individual Activity:
* Let students explore Fruits and Vegetables Speak Up from
the "5 A Day Adventures" CD-ROM to discover the number
one producers of the various fruits and vegetables in the
U.S.
* Extend the search to identify the world's top producers.
* Use U.S. and World maps to let students graphically
represent their findings. Have them develop color coded
or other keys to accompany their maps.
Related Activities:
* Have students work on this activity in conjunction with
the closely-related 'Temperature Zones' social studies
activity.
* Have students use information they gathered to find out
what makes particular geographical locations more suited
to certain fruits and vegetables.
* Have students write letters from the language arts letter
writing activities.
* Have them use the opportunity to ask questions about a
location's climate, soil type, rainfall, etc.
* Have students graph information they gather according to
the number of top- producing states in the North, South,
East, West, Midwest, Southeast, etc.
* Discuss with students what is grown in their home state
and what produce is available to them.
