Language Arts Idea #5
Book Box
Objective:
The students will read and share about books dealing with food.
Rationale:
After studying fruits and vegetables and being introduced to the food
pyramid, students can see how different foods may play a role in the
books they read. By reading about various foods, their interest in
and knowledge of the foods may be increased.
Students are introduced to the food pyramid in the Pyramid Land
section of "5 A Day Adventures". Now let them find out how different
foods may play a role in the books they read!
Materials:
Books about food (see Mouth Watering Reading, pages 2-3)
Box for books
Magazines, markers, etc. for decorating box
Book marks
Poster board
Introduction:
* Inform students that they will be expected to read a book or a
certain number of books that deal with food.
* The books may be placed in a book box that the students can
decorate as an introduction to the activity.
* Students may then select their books, or the teacher may choose a
book for each student.
Individual Activities:
* For each book the student reads, have him/her illustrate a
bookmark, showing the food or foods the book deals with. Blanks
for the date and number of pages read should be provided on the
bookmark.
* After the book is read, have the students make a poster of
his/her original idea for a book cover.
* Have students write a critique of the book. Include a rating, why
the book was or was not liked, place the critiques beside their
corresponding book cover posters.
* Have students bring in and share a food mentioned in their book.
* Students may dress like one of their book characters. Do this on
the day the food is brought in!
Related Activities:
* If the teacher reads the books in the book box in advance, he/she
may assign questions and activities in designated places
throughout the book.
* Students may be asked to write a summary of the book, a paper
about the main character(s), or a new ending to the story.
* Students may be asked to complete a project about their story.
* Ask the school librarian to set up a special display in the
library of books about fruits and vegetables, kids gardening,
cooking, and nutrition.
