- U.S. ROBOTICS ANNOUNCES SPORTSTER ISDN 128K
-
- PC-Based Terminal Adapter Provides ISDN Connectivity,
- Supports Windows 95 ISDN Capabilities
-
-
- SKOKIE, Ill., -- September 26, 1995 -- U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ: USRX) today
- announced its new Sportster ISDN 128K, a PC-based terminal adapter
- providing connectivity to ISDN-based services. The company also announced
- that the product is designed to work with the newly-introduced ISDN
- capabilities in Microsoft Windows 95. The Sportster ISDN 128K will be
- available in November, 1995, and is list priced at $549.
-
- "We see the Sportster ISDN 128K helping to spur the early adopter market,
- which consists primarily of Internet access and telecommuting applications
- requiring ISDN-only connectivity," said Neil Clemmons, vice president of
- marketing for U.S. Robotics' Personal Communications Division. "In areas
- of the country where it is readily available, as well as internationally,
- ISDN is starting to gain more widespread popularity. The Sportster ISDN
- 128K allows our customers to more cost-effectively take advantage of
- ISDN's higher bandwidth."
-
- Advanced Performance With Windows 95
- Based on technology from the company's recent acquisition of ISDN Systems
- Corporation, the Sportster ISDN 128K will provide a host of advanced
- features, including the company's new TurboPPP feature set, designed to
- enhance performance with Windows 95.
-
- "The Sportster ISDN 128K provides excellent ISDN connectivity for Windows
- 95," said Charles Fitzgerald, product manager, Personal Systems Division,
- Microsoft Corporation. "U.S. Robotics and Microsoft, with the combined
- capabilities of the Sportster ISDN 128K and Windows 95, aim to make ISDN as
- easy to use as modems are today, easing the transition to ISDN and bringing
- ISDN's high-performance capabilities to a wider audience."
-
- TurboPPP: Enhanced Throughput, Compression
- A key component of the Sportster ISDN 128K is TurboPPP, a set of
- capabilities developed by U.S. Robotics to maximize performance over ISDN.
- TurboPPP is a collection of features designed to work with industry
- standards. It opens up the potential of ISDN to software that does not
- support Multilink PPP (aggregation of multiple ISDN B channels for higher
- throughput) or data compression. TurboPPP enhances the data transmission
- of any PPP application, negotiating the use of two B channels (64 Kbps
- each) via Multilink PPP for aggregate throughput of 128 Kbps.
- Additionally, TurboPPP supports multiple forms of data compression for
- ISDN transmissions. If the user's software does not support compression,
- TurboPPP senses compression support in a remote device and sends
- compressed data. Potential throughput up to 512 Kbps can be achieved.
-
- Additional Features: Channel Aggregation, Compression, Voice Support Ideal
- for telecommuting and Internet applications over ISDN, the Sportster ISDN
- 128K includes Multilink PPP, allowing two 64 Kbps B channels to be
- aggregated for total uncompressed throughput up to 128 Kbps, achieving
- faster transmission of graphics, large files and LAN-based data. The
- product also supports NDIS, ODI, Packet Driver and TAPI interfaces for use
- with popular Internet, remote LAN access and data communications software
- packages.
-
- The Sportster ISDN 128K supports voice communications over a standard
- analog phone, dynamically dropping one of its two 64 Kbps channels to
- accept a voice call and automatically bringing the channel back up for data
- when the call is completed. This allows data to be sent without
- interruption. The product also includes an integrated NT-1 (network
- termination device); no other device is needed to connect to ISDN services.
-
- Product Targeted to Power Users, Early Adopters
- The Sportster ISDN 128K is a cost-effective, high-performance solution for
- ISDN-only connectivity. Although the ISDN market is still a small
- percentage of the overall data communications market, the product allows
- U.S. Robotics to provide a solution for those users who have applications
- that require the higher bandwidth of ISDN. In combination with the Courier
- I-Modem products, targeted at users requiring access to both ISDN and
- analog services, the Sportster ISDN 128K allows U.S. Robotics to fulfill
- customer needs with a range of desktop ISDN solutions.
-
- U.S. Robotics is one of the world's leading suppliers of products and
- systems that provide access to information. The company designs,
- manufactures, markets and supports remote access servers,
- enterprise communications systems, desktop/mobile client products and
- modems that connect computers and other equipment over analog, digital and
- switched cellular networks, enabling
- users to gain access to, manage and share data, fax and voice information.
- Its customers include Internet service providers, regional Bell operating
- companies and a wide range of other large corporations, businesses,
- institutions and individuals. The company's 1994 sales were $499.0
- million; sales for the first nine months of fiscal 1995 were $596.0
- million.
