  2. also been known as "The Dog Star", "The
  3. Nile Star", and "The Scorching One".
  4. Being the brightest star next to the 
  5. sun, Sirius has an impressive set of
  6. myths and legends attached to it. To 
  7. the Egyptians it signalled the time 
  8. for the Nile to rise. Virgil told on
  9. how it brought drought and disease. 
  10. Sirius is an unusual double star in 
  11. that it has a tiny "white dwarf" 
  12. companion (mag. 8.65). The dwarf is 
  13. only twice the size of earth, but has
  14. as much mass as the sun. This makes it
  15. so dense that a cubic inch would weigh
  16. over 2 tons.
