- Hi! I just discovered whilst reading uk.misc, that alt.personals and
- alt.personals.ads is not carried by the company who forward net news traffic
- (something like UKNet Ltd.) in the UK.
-
- There are many companies supplying netnews in the UK and none of them
- are called UKNet Ltd.
-
- News providers are free to block or feed particular groups as they see
- fit: you pays your money and takes your choice.
-
- Commercial news providers (and intermediate feeds) may be obliged to
- block or limit a news feed for all sorts of reasons: possible
- illegality, potential breaches of network policy (cf acceptable usage
- criteria on academic nets like JANET of NSFnet), or something more
- mundane like availability of bandwidth or disk space.
-
- Your site gets netnews from Edinburgh University. I can't speak for
- them, but it may well be that they don't want to carry "sensitive"
- newsgroups which might cause offence or bad publicity. I'm sure you
- can imagine the sort of outcry that our tabloid newspapers could make
- out of a story about a University, taxpayer's money and an electronic
- lonely hearts column.
