  14. Maureen Dowd's and Frank Rich's special Inaugural column,
  15. "The Boomers' Ball" (1/21/93)...

  22. It was the political equivalent of the hand-from-the-grave
  23. punchline of the Stephen King movie, "Carrie."

  25. In the middle of the ABS Inaugural Day coverage, a shocking
  26. phone call arrived from Nancy Reagan, who did not seem to
  27. be quite in the spirit of the day.

  29. The former First Lady had been desperately trying to call
  30. Barbara Walters, an old friend, to privately correct
  31. something Ms. Walters had said on the air yesterday.  But
  32. somehow, Mrs. Reagan was connected to Peter Jennings on the
  33. air.  She insisted that the phone receiver be immediately
  34. passed to Ms. Walters.

  36. While Mr. Jennings and David Brinkley sat by, bemused by
  37. the strange scene, Mrs. Reagan unloaded on both her
  38. successors.  She insisted that, no matter what Ronald
  39. Reagan's office said, that the Reagans had not been invited
  40. to the Clinton inauguration.

  42. She insisted that, no matter what Barbara Bush said, she
  43. had given Mrs. Bush a full tour of the White House,
  44. including laundry chute, during the 1988 transition.  And
  45. she compained bitterly that the Bushes had never invited
  46. the Reagans back for a state dinner.  (Even though the
  47. Reagans never once had the Bushes to dinner at the residence
  48. in the eight years they ran the roost.)

  50. The prospects for the Reagans being invited to a State
  51. Dinner in the Clinton White House do not look too good
  52. either.
