  32. I've read that while slavery in Mexico was illegal, a series
  33. of fictious "indentured servitude" contracts were used to keep slaves
  34. brought into Mexican Texas in slavery.

  36. Another factor that motivated American opposition to Mexican 
  37. Government in both Texas and California was the requirement that
  38. to pass on anything of value to your heirs, you had to be Catholic.
  39. Since Americans of that time were overwhelmingly Protestant, this
  40. created serious problems as American settlers got old enough to 
  41. start worrying about who was going to get their ranch.
