- The question is not whether or not a force of B2s could destroy a task
- group (I tend to agree with your theoretical scenario). The question is
- "If we make enough B2s, can we get rid of all our carriers?"

- I think the answer to that is blatantly "No, we can't". At least, not as
- long as Congress controls the purse strings. President Johnson tried to
- run a strategic bombing campaign in Vietnam using B-52s. That worked fine
- until one got shot down. Then Congress started screaming about the expense,
- and we wound up trying to use Phantoms as strategic bombers. There's a
- park in Hanoi that has a sculpture made out of an F4 tail unit.

- Now, you may correctly point out that the operating expense of a carrier
- task force, plus the cost of a few A-10s makes the cost of one or two
- B2s look like pocket change, but congresscritters don't see things that
- way. If all we had were B2 bombers, the pres. would never be allowed to
- risk one in combat. Hummmm. Maybe that's not a bad idea after all!
