- Russian tanks lead an attack which captured the Salsk rail junction,
- southwest of Stalingrad. A renewed attack on the German Stalingrad
- pocket is launched, proceeded by a massive artillery bombardment.

- American attacks on Guadalcanal make progress, with sizable gains toward
- Kokumbona.

- German forces retreat from Tripoli, taking with them as many supplies as
- they can and destroying much of the dockworks.

- The last Japanese resistance in Papua ends. About 7000 Japanese
- soldiers have been killed in the New Guinea campaign; Allied losses are
- around 3500.
