  12. If you are willing to spend a day in a Passport office (such as the offices
  13. in San Francisco or New York), it is possible to do it in one day.  These
  14. days, they will generally require you to have a plane ticket in hand to
  15. do this.  What I did in San Francisco was walk into a travel agency 
  16. down the street, and charge a refundable ticket to Amsterdam.  Two
  17. hours later, I left the Passport office with my new passport.  (Actually,
  18. I was traveling overseas for interviews, so I did not have my "real"
  19. ticket, it was to be picked up at the airport.)

  21. It is important that you get to the office as early as possible ... lines
  22. can be long.  I believe you can also get your passport issued at once if
  23. you are overseas and the original is lost or stolen - you need to go to a
  24. US embassy or consulate office to do this.  Of course you should have the
  25. paper work, photos, and acceptable proof of citizenship with you when you
  26. go to the office.
