- You should generally turn in the direction of the skid, but you also have
- to give a little gas to make the car go anywhere at all. Driving on bad
- raods takes practice, and it also assumes that you know your vehicle and
- how it will respond. I recall coming down a steep slope (paved) on a snowy
- road once (it actually happened several times -- it was the road to my
- in-laws' house), trying to use compression to keep my speed down (I also
- used to drive Big Trucks) and having the traction on my rear wheels be so
- small that I started to slide. The only reesponse is to step on the gas
- and get some control back, but, of course, that makes you go faster on an
- already unsteady course. I'd suggest going to a big parking lot and "do
- donuts," which is what we used to do for fun late at night in northern Utah
- (Hey, I was a teenager!). If the lot is big enough, and ther are no cars,
- and the snow is solid enough, you can slip and slide to your heart's
- conten. It's silly, but it's a good way to learn how to turn in skids to
- regain control.
-
- But, really, once the roads get so bad, your best bet is really slow speed.
- I recently came off the local mountain at 4-5mph behind a police escort
- when 10mph was way too fast. I got down OK. The 10-mph guy was in a
- ditch, the last I saw of him.
